United Way of Northwest Vermont announces $372,000 in subgrants for substance misuse prevention efforts in Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle, and Washington Counties
South Burlington, VT: United Way of Northwest Vermont (UWNWVT) is issuing $372,000 in subgrants to 19 organizations to support substance misuse prevention efforts in Chittenden, Franklin, Grand Isle, and Washington Counties.
The funding comes from the State of Vermont Department of Health Division of Substance Use Programs (DSU) and is part of the state’s new framework for regional funding to advance a statewide system of substance misuse prevention.
UWNWVT is one of four Lead Prevention Organizations selected by DSU to lead regional substance misuse prevention activities and subgrant funds to community prevention partners. Funding applications were reviewed by volunteer Funding Committees made up of local community members from the region.
“Substance misuse affects every community in Vermont. The Funding Committee’s decisions were guided by local needs and priorities in our region. We are grateful for their commitment and dedication and excited to support the incredible work that prevention partners are doing in our communities,” said UWNWVT Prevention Network Manager Mahat Abdullahi.
State funds offered through these subgrants are for the purpose of advancing substance misuse prevention, across all ages and substances, by:
- preventing the onset of substance misuse,
- delaying initiation of substance use,
- promoting healthy lifestyles, and
- optimizing wellbeing among individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan.
Collectively, the funded programs and projects will reduce disparities in access to prevention resources and support a holistic prevention model that builds community. They will also address risk and protective factors for multiple populations such as youth, parents and caregivers, people who identify as Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color, people who identify as LGBTQ+, people from households with limited financial means, and people experiencing homelessness.
