MEET JANE

When Jane Berry, 76, retired from a career in special education her good friend and former director of the Foster Grandparent Program at United Way encouraged her to try volunteering to help children at her local school.

“I said I’d give it a try,” Jane recalls. That was 11 years ago. Since then, Jane has been a reliable fixture in the kindergarten classroom at St. Albans Town Educational Center.

She helps kids with reading and math but also gives out hugs and encouragement to children who are struggling. She remembers a student whose family was in crisis: “With a lot of support from me and other people, she got herself together. She’s a senior in high school and doing well.”

“Being able to help kids when they need help and being able to be with the kids that might need a hug or a smile. That’s basically my favorite part.”
