365 Small Business Leader Spotlight: Clear Spot

Tell us about your business. What are your core values?

  • Clear Spot is a mom-and-pop communications consulting business. Before this, our careers were in nonprofit communications, marketing, and fundraising. Now we are a trusted partner for mission-driven organizations looking for communications support for ongoing and on-call projects. We love developing content and strategy. Our partners value us because we free up their time. We are flexible enough to get really invested in the projects we take on. We absorb and reflect our partners’ voice and mission, and they value our integrity and spirit of collaboration.

Why is being connected to the community important to your business?

  • Locally grown food tastes better and is better for you. Stories are similar. The more common understanding we share, the more stories click, the more connection occurs, the more trust is built. We’re in the business of figuring out and talking about how we all care about important things. That’s kind of the essence of community, so we’re steeped in it. And if we do our jobs well, we’re helping build it.

Why is your United Way partnership important to you?

  • United Way of Northwest Vermont uses the tagline “people helping people,” but it might be more accurate to say “people trusting people.” If United Way is involved, people are putting each other first. If you’re accessing a service, if you’re volunteering, if you’re an employer bringing in a workplace program, if you’re a funded partner, if you’re a funder, you know that the people doing work are doing it well. Mutual trust is sort of radical these days, but communities can’t thrive without it. United Way illuminates the way we want to live in the community we already live in.
